4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work, study and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in class throughout the semester.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

4.2. Learning tasks

The course includes the following learning tasks: 

  • Lectures.
  • Practice sessions.
  • Autonomous work and study.
  • Assessment tasks.

4.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics: 

  • Topic 1. The concept of literature in the Middle Ages. Chronology. Authorial diversity. Linguistic plurality. Dissemination. Manuscripts and printed material.
  • Topic 2. Epic. Lost and preserved poems. Cantar de mio Cid: authorship and dating. Structure: honour and humorous episodes. The public and society.
  • Topic 3. The origins of prose. The importance of translations. Alfonso X's literary production. The short story.
  • Topic 4. The origins of theatre. Liturgical drama. The unique circumstances of Castile. The Representación de los Reyes Magos. Paratheatrical performances.
  • Topic 5. The mester de clerecía (the art of the clerics) from the 13th century: characteristics and works. Gonzalo de Berceo and the Milagros de Nuestra Señora.
  • Topic 6. The clergy in the 14th century: continuity and rupture. The Libro de Buen Amor by Juan Ruiz: authorship and dating. Intentionality. The amorous pseudo-autobiography. Parody and humour.
